Cracking the Enigma
“Something that is difficult or impossible to understand or explain” – The definition of a mystery, as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary.
What fascinates us about mysteries? Why are we drawn to enigmas? Is it the challenge of trying to work out what something is, where it came from, where ‘they’ went to, how could they build this, why would they….? Maybe humanity needs to strive to feel whole; to work out an enigma so as to learn from it and evolve further? Our yearning for knowledge drives us on to understand everything around us and beyond us. It is a defining characteristic of being human. Without this yearning to know more and evolve further, we wouldn’t have got as far as we have so far. And we are quite a story. Although, it just seems like our story is not always so clear-cut or written in stone (and sometimes literally). Even when there is a general consensus on some past mystery, not all avenues are investigated and ticks ticked. This leads to a mystery lingering on – never fully quenched. Whatever it is that fascinates us with such things, we have more than enough mysteries to be getting on with, even in our advanced modern world.
Many attempts have been made to try and solve many of the world’s most famous mysteries, and many have had great reasoning and ideas in trying to crack the enigmatic puzzles. Some have been grounded in scientific method, and others further out there -sometimes in space (many times in space)
That’s the Spirit!
In fact, we are a mystery ourselves – a walking enigma. A bag of flesh, with bits and bones, seemingly traversing this planet for thousands of years. What drives us – is it just the need to survive? Are we really just this physical, biological body that is born, lives, dies and then rots? Almost all previous cultures and present-day religions hint at a spiritual side to our fleshy existence; a soul that inhabits each living human, and possibly each living creature, in this physical existence. The souls are thought to exist outside our dense, physical realm – using our fleshy bodies as a vehicle to ‘live’ a life; and then maybe another life…and another – reincarnation. Like a computer game, we play a game of life. And each time we move on to a new life, we get better at the game until….we can rise no higher. We have ‘won’ the game – an evolved soul. Could everything we have created be a subconscious representation of ourselves – “God made man in his own image” and so too do we create ourselves at every given opportunity? Of course, the holographic theories of our reality seem to blend similar thinking: this idea that we live in a projected universe, where nothing is truly ‘real’ – an example of thinking being that of the movie The Matrix.
The above ideas open all sorts of further possibilities, particularly in the area of mysteries and phenomenon: ghosts, dimensions, higher spiritual entities, monsters and myths, aliens, ley lines, different forms of energy and matter. The list is seemingly endless.
In fact, does the idea of a ghost suddenly become less mysterious if we consider that we might live in a holographic existence, for example? Or that we are possibly a soul or higher form of existence represented in this dimension – if there truly are other dimensions? A ghost could be an echo of a previous event – a lasting projection of something or someone that was important at that time; maybe an emotion recorded in time, in stone, in crystal, or the like, and then replayed back when a trigger is reached. Arthur C Clarke posed such a similar question in his fascinating series Arthur C Clarke’s Mysterious World. The whole subject of ghosts has been with us since we can remember and will no doubt be the subject of countless more movies, books and series until a time when we might explain away this mysterious phenomenon.
My Dimension, or Yours?
When something “mysterious” happens – a figure of a person appearing or disappearing, a full squadron of planes disappearing from the earth (Bermuda Triangle), strange anomalies (the Tunguska Event, the Zone of Silence), complex crop circles appearing in fields, alien craft and entity-interaction, and such – what exactly are we experiencing? Could these happenings be as exciting as sudden openings and glimpses into other dimensions – a break in the fabric of nature, or our perceived projected existence, or maybe the same plane of existence on a different frequency band? Maybe we are talking about interaction with other beings from outside of our planet, or maybe even those already here, or interdimensional! Or, is it simply a more down-to-earth explanation like human hoaxes, or misunderstandings of natural phenomenon? The advent of quantum theory has opened up the idea of dimensions as something other than theory.
Size Matters.
Despite our advanced technologies and present understanding of things, we are still a species affected and fascinated by the mysterious. Of course, we have a greater and augmenting understanding of ourselves, nature and our universe as we delve deeper and investigate reality more each day. But there is so much that eludes us. When we analyse the paintings, scriptures and clues left by our ancestors, we might get the idea that they experienced the mysterious too, but maybe it was not so mysterious to them in their time. Indeed, the very use of the pyramids has always been hotly debated. The continued main theory is that of a giant tomb for the elite of the time; others suggest a place of transition for the soul to the heavens; different still is the idea of a giant transmitter of energy or information to the masses – a way to download consciousness from the heavens or initiated so as-to share with humanity.
Who Goes There?
All over the planet, there are signs of possible sightings or even interaction with other-worldly beings or aliens. The indigenous peoples of America, for example (Legends Rock, Christina Lake), have cave paintings of figures that can only be described as alien-like (as we understand it). These non-human figures could also be the Native American SkinWalkers – these creatures are often cross-referenced as both alien and a possible Bigfoot character. Such reportings of strange sightings are mirrored around the world, and often in the same geographical areas time and time again. In the UK, one area of interest is that of North Yorkshire. A quiet and quite unsuspecting location exists where mass sightings of UFOs, abnormal creatures and odd paranormal phenomenon occur. These sightings and reports have been well documented by Paul Sinclair at Truth Proof.
It seems that the world over, there are similar stories and reports of creatures like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster (Nessie), SkinWalkers, unusual phenomenon, UFO sightings and even abductions. And, as mentioned, very often they occur in the very same areas each time. What causes such regular reports in key areas: is it a genuine concentration of activity in an area – maybe based on energy – or is it just the fact that once a localised legend is created…it is difficult to kill?
Stop Hitting Me with Those Negative Waves
Energy could play a part in much of this. Or, a concentration of energy in one place. Ley lines, or Leys, have been in our history for a long time. In fact, they are represented physically in many areas around the world. Indeed, Standing Stones are thought to either channel or mark these ley line energy veins across the country, and indeed across the world. They could be seen as acupuncture of the planet. Most countries around the world have a map of energy lines. It appears that our ancestors understood where these lines were, and indeed built important sites on them. Such sites as Alignements de Carnac in France and Thornborough Henges in the UK, appear to be aligned with these ley lines. It appears that the most famous of these sites, Stonehenge, is also built across a major leyline.
In fact, there is still much debate about the original intention for and usage of sites like Stonehenge and Avebury, for example. Even today we are hearing of new studies into its extended use as a measure of lunar cycles too. Our ancestors who built these places placed great importance in them and their use. The significance they held is still not fully understood, and even how such large sites – and Stonehenge is not the largest by any stretch – could have been created using the assumed tools and methods of their timeframe is still a mystery to this day.
The Enchantment of a Mystery
To put it in very simple terms: mystery enchants us; it gives us a story with no ending; it fuels our fire for more. We want to know what is truly behind the mystery, but at the same time we want it to elude us. Our yearning to discover and uncover drives us on and emboldens us with knowledge, but at the expense of that unknowing and enigma – the thing that drives all our stories: mystery!
If there is just one dimension – and it is this dense, physical one – then much can be explained away with similar cold thought. But there is always one part of the puzzle missing in mysteries that gives them their appeal. We remain enchanted.
